joining the {critical} masses

Last Friday, Erik and I joined in on SF Critical Mass. It’s a monthly “protest” that occurs the last Friday of every month in which bicycle riders gather and ride around the city to encourage others to bike. The insane thing is that its very loosely organized…meaning a bunch of people get together and some decide to lead the way and everyone else follows. The mass does not stop, even for red lights. I picked up a term called “corking”. If the light is red, some kind-hearted individuals will stop their bike in the intersection, and cork cars who have the green light from proceeding; this allows the mass to keep flowing.

Kristen and Erik are ready…only thing is, they can’t find the mass.

Found them swarming the middle of an intersection.

Police escorts along the way.

A whole lot of people & bikes.

The double decker bike!

Crusing down embarcadero. Someone got angry here and slammed his bike on a car.
Not cool! These rides are suppose to be peaceful.

We stuck close to this guy and enjoyed the beats. Thx music man!

We went through a tunnel, after which erik’s tire popped and that ended our first critical mass. We had followed along for a couple hours and they were still going.
It was quite an experience to ride with such a large group, to fly through red lights, and to be amongst a group of people that were standing up for something they believed in.
